Disadvantaged SA babies at risk without a safe sleep environment

We have run out of cots!

Treasure Boxes now has a waitlist of newborn babies who desperately need a safe place to sleep – and we need your help.

A safe sleeping environment is one of the easiest ways to reduce a baby’s risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) or SUDI (Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy) but sadly, the retail price of a cot is not affordable for many SA families.

Treasure Boxes’ Founder and CEO, Rikki Cooke, says “Throughout many years working as an emergency care worker and social worker, I have seen first hand some of the worst conditions that babies sleep in. Treasure Boxes was started in 2015 to protect and care for all newborns, and to ensure that, regardless of their family life, they have the opportunity to sleep safely”.

In 2021 we delivered 223 cots and bassinets to families around SA, with this figure expected to increase by the end of 2022. Safe sleeping essentials were provided to mums who had fled violent homes leaving everything behind, young parents without enough savings to buy a cot for their newborn, and grandparents who became carers for their grandchildren overnight.

We need 100 cots to ensure we can meet this year’s demand and ensure every vulnerable baby in SA has a safe place to sleep. Your support ensures we can continue to provide our critical service when SA families need us the most.

Donate today to provide SA babies with a safe sleeping environment.

Funds raised will be used to purchase cots and bassinets through our preferred supplier, CNP Brands. We may also purchase toddler beds according to demand.

Cots and bassinets are provided to families and carers through Treasure Boxes’ Safe Start program, proudly supported by The Hospital Research Foundation Group.
